MISTI May-nia

Welcome to Day 29 of Misti May-Nia!  If you haven't heard, Iliana is giving away a Mini MISTI every day the entire month of May.  All you have to do is comment on our blog and we will select one winner to be the lucky recipient of a Mini MISTI.  Since the MISTI is fast becoming the BFF of crafters everywhere, what do you say you leave a special memory of YOUR best friend in the comment field.

The winner will be announced on June 1st so be sure and check back to see if your name was selected!  You can also see the list of winners, blogs that are participating and fabulous cards from Iliana on her blog.

Last year, Iliana decided the MISTI needed another friend to keep her company while she busted out card after card.  After a phone call full of silliness, we plotted rubber, foam, cling, thickness and other craziness.  We sent her over a couple different chunks of rubber to test out with the MISTI and after a few attempts, she finalized the Mirror Image Stamp!

Like traditional reverse image stamps, it will allow you to get the "opposite" or mirror image of a particular stamp, only this one works with your MISTI!  Justine has been doing a week long series on the MISTI and she has a great tutorial video up on how to use the Mirror Image Stamp with the MISTI so be sure and check it out.

In the meantime, I had a fabulous time playing with the Mirror Image Stamp AND some new stamps that are coming out on June 1st!  Shhhhh, it's a sneak peek and the Design Team doesn't know I am about to let the cat out of the bag, but I just couldn't help myself!

For this card I wanted to show the different emotions we go through when we lose someone we love.  On one side, we have the release and the other the feelings we have to carry in our hearts.

  • I started by stamping the Blowing Butterflies (in stock June 1st) onto the top side of the paper with Versa Mark.
  • I then embossed it with black embossing powder
  • I didn't want the leaves and the black embossing powder affecting the white so I went ahead and randomly stamped the leaves onto the paper and embossed them as well.
  • Now comes the fun part with the Mirror Image Stamp
Mirror Image Stamp

1.  Place the Mirror Image Stamp at the TOP of the MISTI - DO NOT TOUCH YOUR STAMP - leave it right where it is.

2.  Ink the stamp with Versa Mark and stamp it onto the rubber.  If your Versa Mark is juicy, you only need to do this once.

Check out the Versa Mark on the rubber (I only did it the one time)

3.  Place your paper on top of the Mirror Image Stamp.  In this case, I wanted the opposite end of my paper so when I pull the paper off and emboss it, my Blowing Butterflies will be in the EXACT opposite space from the black butterflies.

4.  I then just took my fingers and gently rubbed the paper over the stamped image.  The best part is if you are working with ink and it didn't get on the paper, you can just huff on your rubber and place the paper right back down.  The MISTI allows you to line it up perfectly!  (YEAH!)

Pretty snappy, huh?  It's so much easier than I first anticipated and you can do it with anything!  Reflections, kissing critters, so much fun!

  • Now that I had my white side embossed with the butterflies and the leaves, I was ready to move onto the fun part!

  • I wanted to give the illusion of the moon for both sides of my card so I took the negative circle from Jo's Bubbles Clarity Stencil and placed it down using my Post-It Tape.
  • I also masked off the black side from the white side with the Post-It Tape so I didn't accidentally get purple ink into the pink section.

Check out that color!!!!

  •  I removed the circle mask for the moon and then randomly brushed on some Thistle Thicket and Lilac Love.  I didn't want it dark in color, but I didn't want to leave it plain white.
  • I wanted to add a few little "stars" to my card so I added some white accents with my white Sakura Gelly Roll pen

I then removed the Post It Tape for the Mask line and voila!  I was finished with the purple side!

Ta Da!  Originally I thought of just leaving it as it was, but I wanted a bit of sparkle in-between the two sides.  Salima has been on a glitter frenzy and I thought to myself, why the heck not!  I can totally add glitter to this bad boy!

  • I added a line of 1/8" double sided tape between the two sides
  • I removed the top protective layer from the tape

  • And I had instant sparkle!
  • I totally wasn't finished with the glitter at this point!
  • I thought about doing some glitter paper behind this layer, but I hate fighting with glue dots to make it stick so I broke out the 10mm Sticky Tape and made my own glitter paper!

  •  I added strips around all four sides of the paper
  • Dumped on the glitter
  • Burnished it with my finger

  • Instant Glitter paper!
  • I taped the front panel to my faux glitter paper and I was ready for the sentiment!

  • As much as I love this sentiment the way it is, I wanted to split them up for the card.  (Sentiment will be out on June 1st)
  • I placed my sentiment in the MISTI with my Vellum
  • I placed my Post It tape over the part I didn't want embossed
  • Then inked up the remaining sentiment with Versa Mark
  • Removed the Post It Tape
  • Stamped it onto my Vellum
  • Embossed with Silver
  • Repeated the process with the bottom portion of the stamp

Now I have the Pink Side...

...and the purple!

I mounted the card to a black card and it is all finished!

As much as I loved making this card, it also reminds me that I have some friends I need to call to tell them how important they are to me.

Thank you so much for following along today.  I know it's a super long post, but I don't blog often so I figured this is a compilation of all of the blogging I HAVEN'T done!  =)

Don't forget to leave a comment below for your chance to win a Mini MISTI!!!!

Until next time,
Happy Stamping!

  2. So beautiful! My best bud and I probably drank a bit too much one night, just a home, and I remember laughing and laughing so much our sides hurt. Never had that much fun!

  5. My best friend happens to be a guy who is not gay and not into me. Very rare. The day before my wedding, we had way to much to drink ended up on my sister's bed as he was sleeping over and literally fell asleep next to him after talking all night drunk. Should have seen the shocked face of my aunty when she came to wake him up.

  7. fabulous and very educational blog. My BFF lives on another continent so we don't see each other as often as we would like, but when we do it is as if it was only yesterday and we just spend our time reminiscing and catching up, cos we never know how long till we see each other again

  12. Very pretty! One very recent experience with my best bud will become a fond memory. Just last weekend we were headed to a paper crafting show and sale. My car started wobbling a little left, then a little right while driving on the New York State Thruway and then the check tire pressure light came on. We couldn't see anything wrong with the tires, but ended up having a tow truck come out. It turns out that there was nothing wrong with my car - but it was a section of "experimental" pavement. Fail! We ended up continuing on to the show and had no further problems once we got past that section of pavement. This one will go down as a memory for sure.

  14. These cards are perfect & gorgeous! I love everything about them especially the mirror imaging! So my favorite memory is with parents (they are senior citizens)...and they love babies and children. So when we are out and about every child we see we have to go up and share a dollar and a hug. They adore children and have to touch with parents permission of course. Best memories ever...we get to meet alot of interesting and sweet people. Thanks for sharing your creativity! Simply beautiful!!!

  15. My BFF moved across the country when we were about 7 or 8 years old. Now nearly 30 years later, we're still on the phone regularly, sending cards and letters and birthday gifts, and currently planning our next visits. We're 800 km apart, but somehow we always end up having very similar experiences - and lots to talk about :-)

  36. Awesome card and technique! My best friend growing up is my best friend to this day: my younger sister. We essentially did everything together. Whether it was putting on a "magic" show or playing pranks on our older siblings, I knew we would be at each other's side. College and careers took us to very different parts of the country. After almost a decade of living in different cities, she has moved from Philly to Virginia to live down the street from me!

  84. Your card is so lovely with the sentiment split onto the two mirror images it really signifies the stages of loss and grief. Very touching. I love all the details you added to make this so special. You introduced me to several new products like the mirror image rubber (definitely on my wish list) and the clarity brushes. I like the idea of having a brush designated for specific colour families. I love the Misti and would absolutely love to win a mini Misti. My best friend lives in Texas and I live in Ontario Canada so we don't see each other often but we have been bff's since high school (I'll just say it's been a lot of years) , and even though we don't get together often, when we do it's like we just saw eachother the day before. One of my favourite memories with my bff was when she graduated nursing school and was applying to the hospitals and we went on a road trip to deliver all the resumes. We had never been to most of the cities so it was a lot of map reading, asking for directions and wrong turns, but we drove and listened to music and talked about dreams and goals and the future and it was such a wonderful experience that she wanted to share that time with me of all people and I will never forget that trip. We have had a lot of other great memories over the years and I know we will have a lot more. I am so thankful for her. Thank you for helping me bring those memories to surface again.

My sister Louise would sit with me for hours at a time reading to me and if I felt up to it we would play barbie dolls on my bed.She was and still is a wonderful sister and my best friend. PS... She hated dolls.

  95. Thank you for such a detailed description on how you created these fabulous cards! Very helpful, especially since I'm a very visual person :) Both the MISTI and Mirror Image Stamp look like must haves!

One of my favorite memories was in high school with my best friend Dana. We LOVED to go dancing but her mom was very strict and wouldn't let her, so every week, I would drive by her house after her parents were asleep (I had purple lights under my car so she knew it was me), pull around in a nearby business lot then would stop in front of her house with all of my lights off. She would climb out of her window and run to my car, jump in and we would laugh hysterically as we pulled off to go to the club to go dancing :) It was so much fun and a memory I will cherish forever!

    1. My best friend and I have not gotten together for quite a while. I was injured in 2005 and my life changed drastically. Since then I have had numerous health issues that keep my close to home. Even though we are neighbors it is so hard to find a time that I am feeling well and she isn't busy. I really miss her and we have talked about both of us feeling alone since we don't hang out like we used to. Now that Summer is here I plan to invite them for bbq's and cards!

  116. My best friend and I met in university and had many good times and road trips in her old yellow Duster. After getting married we lived many miles apart for over 25 years. I am happy to say that we have moved to within 20 minutes of each other after all that time and are enjoying our renewed friendship. Thanks for all the tips and instructions on the mirror image stamping - love it! Thanks to you and Iliana for the chance to win a Misti!

  122. So this is how reverse stamping is done. I had no idea! The Misti would really help with positioning. My best friend's name is Sharon. We get together once a week to do scrapbooking or other arts together. She would rearrange her schedule if I needed her suddenly and I like taking her out to lunch just because I love her!

  125. An amazingly beautiful card Suzy and a great tutorial.
My best friend and I lived next door to each other and played EVERY day together. We truly were your typical "giggly girls". We loved to swing together and did so often. One day as we were swinging away, we got to giggling, so much so we fell off. As a result, I laughed SO hard I peed my pants and had to go home to change. On the way, we got laughing so hard about THAT I fell into the ditch and accidentally peed myself again! We STILL laugh about it and that was 50 years ago! (Incidentally, we married 1st cousins and STILL live next door to one another, just in a different community.) LOL

  126. Beautiful card. I married my best friend. :-) We've been together almost 20 years, and we still have just as much fun as we did when we met.

  140. Love the idea of the mirror stamp. I saw it yesterday on your site. I was ordering Flower Flourish. I wanted to see how the mirror stamp worked...then I saw a video by Justine Hovey and now this post.
My friend and I have car issues when we are together. I broke down, she jump started me but then we both broke down and had the be towed. Once, she was getting gas and we drove away with the gas pump still attached to the car! Another time, I bumped into the back of her. It has become our thing...

  141. Thie is a really beautiful card! I never tried the mirror image technique, but now I need to! I love to win a MISTI. Seems to be a great tool.

  142. I have to say that for most of my 20's I was mad with my best friend. I thought she made a lot of mistakes in how she raised her kids. As I got older and had some of my own I began to understand how circumstances thrown at you in life can alter you in many ways. I have forgiven her and she never stopped loving me, because not only is she my best friend, she just happens to be my mother.

    ReplyDelete
  143. My happiest memory of my best friend is when we made up after a nasty fight that resulted in us not talking to each other for over a year. I think that's what true friendship is about—a friendship that endures time, spats, fallouts, and disagreements, when we stick by each other no matter what and are always there for each other, even if we don't speak every single day.

  144. Awesome technique.. Love your project, especially the colors. Thanks for sharing.

  145. How thoughtful. I met my best friend as an adult. We were both first time moms and met at church. Our kids grew up together like siblings. We're still very close.

  150. Now I understand your Mirror stamp I saw on So Suzy! Thanks to you and Justine for informative videos today! Your card about loss of a friend is lovely. My best friend for 48 years, Denise, and I have done lots together! Friends in high school, in each other's weddings, both teachers, both moms, now both grandmothers. We've done crafts together, but it's more my thing, which she admires and supports. I admire her work with teens, she admires mine with elementary kids. A few years ago we took a long trip, our first together, to attend a country fair in Ohio and had a great time. We are members of the same church denomination, though we live 25 miles apart. I can't imagine life without her, my BFF and ever! Thanks for giving away these Mini MISTIs. I do hope I may win one.

  169. Lovely cards!! Great 'mirror image' technique....I really need a MISTI so I can try this out. One of my favorite memories of my BFF was how we met in HS. She has a locker a couple places over from mine and one day, I came from one of my classes and all of her books and things from her locker were all over the ground in front of my locker. She had her locker open and was spraying cockroach spray all over inside of it. She looked at me and said that there was a cockroach in her locker and asked if I wanted her to spray out my locker, too.....lol. We have been BFFs ever since. Thanks for sharing with us today and for the chance to win a Mini MISTI!!

  171. Thanks for the lovely card. My BBF was my husband for 37 years (highschool sweethearts). There are so many good memories: I chose one that still makes me laugh. We were living up in the mountains, and it was really cold. All we had for heat was a little 1800's wood stove. When the fire went out at night, we cuddled. One night I got into bed with my knee-hi's on. He said, "Oh, Honey, you need to shave you legs!!! I laughed til I cried.
